Button up Sunshine

We met the most amazing young lady during the post party after the Azalea Trail run. Her name is Kelley Andrews. Let me share a little about her. Kelley is a recent graduate and cancer survivor who at an early age set out on a mission to develop this head wrap and kerchief line. Her designs were inspired after realizing the limited selection of hats for children sick in the hospital. Through her personal experience, she recalls wearing plain colored ball caps and hats. As a results, Kelley used her creative talents to design the product lines for Button Up Sunshine.

The head wraps are made with cheerful and colorful fabrics for boys and girls.
My son saw the camo headband and had to have it but he also thought Kelley was the sweetest young lady he had ever meet! She was so sweet and took time to help him find just the right one!

She took the time to make sure he understood how to tie it on and wear it correctly.

We had a lot of fun looking at all of her designs. There are so many to choose from. The fabric is set up in a way to absorb the sweat which is perfect when you are out running or biking riding.

Since I have just started training on a bike I felt one would be perfect to wear under my helmet for the very hot summer months. See the idea below.

It was such a pleasure meeting Kelley! Also please know with every 5 head wraps sold 1 goes to a child with cancer. You can see all of her selection at http://www.buttonupsunshine.com/  Thanks so much Kelley and we wish you much success with your wonderful cause!

Trey loves his new head band!

Azalea Trail Run Review

The weather on the day before the race was pretty scary!!! The good part of the bad weather is I did some great research on running in the ran.

But then the sun came out big and bright!!!

Saturday I took part in the 35th Azalea Trail Run and it was a beautiful day! This was my first run this year that had such a high level of humidity and I realized I have some training to do as we enter the hot summer months! I was still satisfied with my time but I didn't set a PR, actually it was almost on the dot of my last 5k run. All of my other races I have improved at least a minute so to stay at the same time was new.

I will start from the beginning with the Friday packet pick up. It seemed to be organized just fine and there was actually more people than I expected with me as we entered the minute the doors opened on Friday at noon. Here are a couple of inside shots.

After picking up your packet with your bib number we moved over to the t-shirt pick up. They were laid out and well organized. In the past with some races it has always been an issue with the shirts being in boxes and the volunteer having to pull from them. This system seemed to work well.

The alphabetical dividers are always such a big help! After checking in I moved over the the purchase line and registered my son so its helpful to be able to handing everything so quickly. They had a good selection of vendors and there was enough room to walk around considering the amount of runners that had signed up.

The shirt was cute and seemed to be cut a little larger which is good because most of the dry fit styles are always cut small.

Now on to Race Day! I was so thankful the sun was out bright and no rain. It turned out to be such a beautiful day! I shared in an earlier blog post that during each race I seem to learn something new so in this race I learned it is very important for me to keep the race date in front of me at all times leading up to the race. This run came up so quickly that I just don't feel I was able to mentally prepare like I should have. Running is so mental for me.I love running once its done and maybe a little before but I really do it for the challenge. I have my 2nd half marathon in April so I didn't pay attention to this one like I should have. This caused me to wake up the morning of in such a nervous state. I feel like I was never able to completely wrap my mind around it and get comfortable! So note to self......I will always be better organized and keep the race date in front of me.

My running buddies!!

Headed to line up. This was the first run that I took part in where the 10K runners started at 8:00am and the 5K started at 8:15. I liked this system because it was exciting seeing friends take off in their race and then lining up for mine.

The crowd was pretty thick at the start line. I was just about right in the middle of the group.

Start line!

The race itself was good but I do have one suggestion for next year. I hate to mention anything negative but this was a very big issue for me. The first water stop was around 2.5 miles and there was only one person working it. He could not possible pour enough water to keep up with the crowd so I missed water at this station. I was so thirsty and the humidity was so heavy that I really needed something to drink. I had to leave this station and just hoped there would be another one.
As I started getting close to mile 3.0 I could see the next water station but this is the part that really bothered me. It was being worked by prisoners in their prison uniforms????? People come from all over to run in this race and to help show off our city and we had prisoners hand out water. I am the very first to say that people deserve a second chance in life but this is also about attracting people to our beautiful city. Next year there has to be better preparation with volunteers to help prevent this. As I mentioned I am not sharing this part out of a negative spirit but one as a suggestion on how to improve the run.
This is what the visitors should remember about our great city...............this is the view!

Back to the good stuff............I crossed the finish line and was so happy!

Yes it was really this hot!!

My Eddie running across the finish line. He had one of his best times so great job Eddie!!!

Chick-fil-A was handing out sandwich's as we crossed the finish line. (Chick-fil-A can pay me later for the ad!  )

My beaming hot red face............I have to train on handling the heat!

Now that is the cutest!!

The halls were lined with massage tables but I was to busy looking for our times and didn't take part!

In a separate post I want to share with you a precious young lady that sells head wraps to benefit children with cancer so keep an eye out for it!

The had red beans and rice and and a station with grits.

One of my favorite part of running is seeing friends. Yea April for running the 10K, you rock!

I was so excited to meet some of the runners from Kenya. This is the women's 3rd place winner and the men's 1st and 2nd place.

1st place and 2nd place runners from Kenya. I think they had about 4:30-5:00 minute mile. That's crazy fast!

The top 4 female runners.

And I love my new sparkle! Here is many more races............

When is your next run?

Planning for a Race in the Rain

Running in the Azalea Trail Run.

 ATR 2012 T-shirt Design

I have a 5k Race this weekend and I believe it might rain so just in case I want to be prepared. This will be my first race where I had to run in the rain. I have been doing a lot of research online and speaking to my running buddies and I wanted to share what I have found.

Every person I spoken to said I need to make sure and have a hat. The brim helps keep water out of your eyes and your vision clear. The roads are already going to be slippery enough without having your vision impaired. Now everyone knows I always run with a hat after the time my bangs crossed the finish line before my body and the finish line photo was the proof of this! I love a mesh style hat so it doesn't hold water.

Tip #2 I need to wear my waterproof light weight jacket. I just purchased a new Nike very light weight water proof jacket so it will be fun to put this to use. My only issue is I hate to be hot so I have to remind myself dry smooth skin is better than hot wet  skin.

If you are like me and carry an IPhone for music and running apps have either a waterproof case of a zip lock bag to store your phone to protect it from the rain. This is very important because as you know it only takes a little bit of water to destroy your phone.

Either one of these would work great!

One of my friends that runs in a lot of races said I should coat my feet with petroleum jelly to prevent blisters. This one is going to be a hard one. I just cant imagine the feeling and how I would handle this. We will just have to see plus I am only running a 5k so I might skip this step. In the future in my long distance runs I might put this tip to the test.  It was also suggested that I run in old shoes but I was just fitted for shoes about 3 months ago and the shoes before were not made for my feet so I think I will stick with my current running shoe. I don't want to risk an injury due to wearing the wrong shoes but if I did have a pair like my new set I would use this tip!

I will have a set of dry clothes for after the run in hopes that the sun comes out. I love this tip...... stuff shoes with old newspaper to help them dry out quickly. I was told to never put them in the dryer because it damages the infrastructure. I will bring y old pair to put on after the race and have paper ready to stuff in my new pair to start the drying process.

If you have any other suggestions or tips for runs in the rain please share!

Grilled Chicken & Pineapple Quesadillas

This is one of my favorite dishes! Its from the Pioneer Woman.com blog and she also has a tv show that just started this season on the Food Network channel. Its so fresh and reminds me of the perfect summer dish. Its very easy to make and fun to serve.

The ingredents are so simple and its the perfect quick week night meal!

Just take your cooked chicken and layer it on the shells with shredded cheese, pineapple, and BBQ sauce!

Let me know if you make it and what you think.

My Son's First Alabama Football Game

This year my son had the opportunity to go to his first major football game. He attended an Alabama Football Game. I just had to share the photos because he had such a great time and it really was special.

That's him in the center holding the football!

My husband and son had a real boys day!

Here's to memories!            Erica

New Garmin Watch I Want to Get My Hands On

I was looking online today and found my next investment. This watch is really something and is perfect for running, biking, and swimming. Great for those people training for a triathlon or just participating in different areas of sporting events. It states it will analyze every step, every stroke, and every pedal.

With swimming it looks at distance, efficiency, stroke type, and stroke count.
With running it monitors distance, pace, and vibration alerts.
With Biking it monitors distance, speed, barometric altimeter.

Now that I am expanding my area of fitness and have added biking I cant wait to get my hands on this! I see this being added to my Christmas list.

Plans For My Spring/Summer Fashion Outfits

I am such a huge fan of Pippa and Kate Middleton. I feel they are roll models for todays young ladies on how to carry themselves and dress. I think Kate has brought back the dress and it will be one of the strongest pieces for this Spring and Summer. I personally am so excited to add new dresses to my waredrobe. A few styles I am looking for are these.....................

I have my nude pumps ready to go! A few other pieces that I like ..................

All source of pinterest

I was just in TJ Maxx the other day and almost picked up the cutiest yellow jacket but since it gets so hot here in the Spring and Summer I didnt purchase it. Now I am really rethinking it and I might rush out and pick it up after seeing this outfit. I already have the white pants and I could easily put the rest of this outfit together. I love it!

They also had this DKNY black bag which was almost $200 from other stores and TJ Maxx had it listed at $99.00. It was the shiny leather and I just wasnt sure if I could carry that for every season. It would be great with this outfit.

Love planning ahead for the new seasons and the new size I hope to be very soon. If I keep my running up which I plan to I will be there soon! Heres to running into a new size!!!
